Free outdoor film screenings to enjoy in the Bay Area this summer

Outdoor movies have become a summer tradition across the Bay Area. For those who want to enjoy some fun, alfresco flicks, here's just a sampling of possibilities.

Redwood City's summer movie experience offers a nonstop, jam-packed carousel of screenings every Thursday evening from June 8 to Aug. 31 at Courthouse Square. They will present a mix of family movies and feature films, with kids movies at 6 p.m., Bravemaker Independent Films at 8 p.m., and main features at 8:30 p.m. Redwood City is the only city in California offering surround-sound movies, alongside its Jumbotron LED Video screen. This series of free, family-friendly movies under the stars screens at the picturesque Town Green. Games and activities will begin at 6:15 p.m., with movies starting at 8:15 p.m.. The lineup includes "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" (June 16), "Lightyear" (June 30), "The Emperor's New Groove" (July 14), and "The Karate Kid" (July 28). Oakland's Jack London Square will host free outdoor film screenings this summer on the Marina Lawn near Channel House. Bring a blanket, lawn chair and take-out from any of your favorite Jack London Square restaurants. Movies will begin at 8:30 p.m., with a lineup including "Mean Girls" (June 24), "Back to the Future" (July 1), "Finding Dory" (July 8) and "Minions: The Rise of Gru" (July 15). Alameda's recreation and park department will host a Starlight Movies in the Park series at various venues this summer, with each event offering a free film screening, plus games and crafts for kids, and snacks available for purchase. Activities start at 6:30 p.m., with screenings beginning between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m. (depending on darkness). The lineup includes "Lightyear" (July 21 at Alameda Point Multi-purpose Field), "Space Jam: A New Legacy" (Aug. 25 at Alameda Point Multi-purpose Field), and "Top Gun: Maverick" (Sept. 15 at Leydecker Field). Millbrae Recreation will host outdoor film screenings on the second Friday of the month at Millbrae Central Park starting at dark on June 9, July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8. Dates are set, but movie choices will be decided by audiences from a list of possibilities that include "Lightyear," "Turning Red," "Puss in Boots," "Space Jam," "Big Hero 6," "Brave," "Nacho Libre," "Sky High," "The Little Rascals" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." This series of free outdoor screenings rotates among Dublin parks, with food and snack vendors on site and games and activities preceding the screenings. Movies will begin at dusk (between 8:30 and 9 p.m.) and include "DC League of Super-Pets" (June 23 at at Emerald Glen Park), "Lightyear " (June 30 at Don Biddle Community Park), "Minions: The Rise of Gru" (July 7 at Dublin Heritage Park and Museums), "Encanto" (July 14 at Emerald Glen Park), "Rumble" (July 21 at Don Biddle Community Park), and "Turning Red" (July 28 at Dublin Heritage Park and Museums). The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will host free weekly screenings on the beach in front of the Colonnade, every Friday at 9 p.m. from June 16 to Aug. 11. The lineup includes "The Lost Boys" (June 16), "Mamma Mia!" (June 23), "Space Jam" (June 30), "Labyrinth" (July 7), "Selena" (July 14), "Minions: The Rise of Gru" (July 21), "Top Gun: Maverick" (July 28), "Shrek" (Aug. 4), and "The Neverending Story" (Aug. 11). Screenings will begin at dusk with a lineup including "Minions: The Rise of Gru" (July 7 at Cuesta Park), "Lightyear" (July 14 at Sylvan Park), "Puss in Boots" (July 21 at Stevenson Park), "DC League of Super Pets" (July 28 at Whisman Park), "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (Aug. 4 at Eagle Park), and "Strange World" (Aug. 11 at Rengstorff Park). Grab a blanket, your favorite lawn chair and some snacks for some fun-filled movie magic under the stars on select Fridays from June 2 to Oct. 13. Screenings will begin at dusk, with a lineup including "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (June 2), "School of Rock" (July 14), "Finding Nemo" (Aug. 11), "Monsters University" (Sept. 8), and "Pirates of the Caribbean" (Oct. 12). All screenings will take place at Old Mill Park, except for "Finding Nemo," which will take place at the Mill Valley Community Center Lawn.
